Why SEO and AEO matter for your business.

When someone in El Paso needs a plumber, a barber or a dentist, they pull out a phone and ask Google, or an AI app like ChatGPT. SEO and AEO are the work that gets your business into what they see next. Here is what each one means, in plain words.

SEO: getting found on Google

SEO is the work that gets Google to show your site. It stands for search engine optimization. For a search like "roof repair El Paso", Google has to decide which pages to show, and SEO helps it understand what your business does, where you work and why your site is worth showing.

It works like the sign over a shop. A clear sign on a busy street brings people in. A website nobody can find is a sign hung in a back alley.

What a search page shows today

Search for a local service on Google and the page is usually built from a few layers, one on top of the next.

  1. AdsBusinesses paying for every click. They disappear when the payments stop.
  2. AI OverviewA short answer Google writes at the top, with links to the pages it took the answer from. Google shows one only when it adds something, so many searches have none.
  3. The mapNearby businesses pulled from their Google Business Profiles, each with its hours and reviews and a button to call.
  4. Regular resultsThe websites Google thinks answer the search best.

SEO is how you get into the map and the regular results. AEO is how you get into the answer.

The page above is a drawing, not a real search.

AEO: being the answer

AEO is the work that gets AI tools to name your business. It stands for answer engine optimization. An answer engine is any tool that writes you an answer instead of handing you a list of links: Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, the assistant on your phone.

Ask one "who fixes water heaters in East El Paso?" and the answer may name a few businesses. The goal is for yours to be one of them.

Answer engines quote sites they can read easily and trust. That means pages that say plainly what you do, where you do it and what it costs, with your phone number and hours matching everywhere they appear online.

Who fixes water heaters in East El Paso?

A few local plumbers handle water heater repair and replacement on the east side, including Your Business, which lists same-week installs and the zip codes it covers on its website.

An example of how an answer can name a business. Not a real answer.

SEO and AEO are mostly the same work

What helps a site rank also helps it get quoted. Google says its AI answers draw on the same pages its regular search already shows, and that a site needs nothing extra to appear in them.

The basics do both jobs:

  • A site that loads fast on a phone
  • A clear page for each service
  • Honest answers to the questions customers ask
  • A Google Business Profile that is filled in and current

Why it's worth doing

People who search are ready to hire.

Someone typing "AC repair near me" in July isn't browsing. They want someone at the house today.

It keeps working while you do.

Your site answers questions at 10 at night, while you're on a job or asleep.

Ads stop when the money stops.

A page that ranks keeps bringing visits after the work on it is done. Rankings take months to build, so it's a slow start that keeps paying.

Customers look you up before they call.

Even someone a friend sent your way will usually search your name first. If they find nothing, or a page that won't load on a phone, some of them call the next business instead.

Your site stays lit after you close.

No one can guarantee you the top spot on Google or a mention in an AI answer, and you should be careful with anyone who does.

What you can control is whether your site gives Google and the answer engines every reason to pick you.

How long it takes. Google's own advice on hiring an SEO is to expect four months to a year before the work shows results. Some fixes land sooner, like a page Google couldn't reach before. Google's advice, reported by Search Engine Land

What we build into your site

  • Speed on phones. We test every site on Google's own speed test and build it to score 95 or higher.
  • A clear place for every service you offer and every area you work in.
  • Plain answers to the questions your customers ask, written so a person and a machine can both follow them.
  • Labels behind the page (called structured data) that give Google your contact details and the area you serve, in a form it can read without guessing.
  • Your Google Business Profile, set up or cleaned up, so you show on the map.
  • A one-page report every month with your visits, calls and clicks.
